The first incident occurred when the rear wheels of a stationary piece of equipment slipped off the rails just north of Wellington around 7:20 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, an MBTA spokesperson said. Investigators believe the rain and slick conditions could have caused this to happen.
The second incident occurred when a piece of equipment used for rail and tie replacement work derailed near the Ruggles Crossover, which is just south of the Massachusetts Avenue station. This happened around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the spokesperson said.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation. Neither incident caused injuries or damage to MBTA equipment or infrastructure, the spokesperson said.
"Every derailment is taken seriously but it is important to remember that pieces of rail-borne equipment with rubber tires and bogie wheels are more susceptible to derailing in an active construction zone," they added.
This comes just days after the Orange Line officially closed for 30 days at 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19. A shuttle bus system has since been put in place to help commuters who normally take the train. More information about the shutdown and alternative travel options can be found online.
